Red Blood Cells // Watercolour Somatic Cells

Continued watercolour cell illustrations for bio-engineering company, the wonderful Fluidigm. This illustration required a river of red blood cells, using oranges, reds and purple colour tones. Here is an initial test piece.

The challenge was to draw many cells at different angles and then to place the shadows in the correct places. Each red blood cell has a middle indentation, with the overall shape of the cell being disc-like. Some of these are a little too bumpy/wobbly looking for red blood cells, and were later corrected with smoother outlines.

After experimenting with colours and practising the shape, I incorporated some perspective into the flowing cells by varying the richness of colour. Here are some of my favourites from the final piece.

H2EAU LONDON // Packaging Labels & Product Samples

During late 2017 through to early 2018 I had the utmost pleasure in working with company "GBBB aka Great British Beauty Brands", to help brand their new beauty product range, H2EAU London. I worked together with a talented graphic designer to produce a series of vibrant illustrations to adorn their Daily Rituals product labels.

The fragrances are: acai & blueberry, coconut & pineapple, cucumber & mint, watermelon & orange and pink grapefruit & cranberry,

When the products were complete, GBBB were wonderfully kind and sent me a box full of full-sized "samples" to try for myself! It was amazing to see my work on the finished products, in situ, and in real life, as opposed to in a photo on a screen. I am thrilled with how they turned out.

H2EAU is a new brand from a long-standing British company. They aim to use only high quality ingredients, and currently have a range of size products in five different fragrances. All of which have a very luxurious feel and smell INCREDIBLE! They are all free from animal ingredients and not tested on animals, making this initial range completely vegan friendly. Personally, I would compare the quality of the Daily Rituals range as similar to that of Bodyshop in the UK.

Their range currently includes: indulgent body butter, soothing body lotion, aromatic body mist, luxurious body wash, gentle body scrub and luxurious hand wash.

H2EAU LONDON // Beauty Packaging Illustrations

During late 2017 through to early 2018 I had the utmost pleasure in working with company "GBBB aka Great British Beauty Brands", to help brand their new beauty product range, H2EAU London. I worked together with a talented graphic designer to produce a series of vibrant illustrations to adorn their Daily Rituals product labels.

I actually worked on and produced the whole series of illustrations twice. I first completed concept pieces to be displayed at an exhibition show. After receiving feedback from the customers/guests at the show, we were able to use the comments to develop the designs further into the most effective, eye-catching designs possible. In total, I produced a set of seven final ingredient illustrations. The following are some stages of development...

From initial sketches, the designs then developed to the rough colour stage. These became the concept illustrations used at the show. Here are two designs that later changed quite a bit.

The final stage was to refine each design further, including shape and colours, and then redo from scratch at a higher quality.

I have illustrated a book! About Bees!

From last October to March this year I had the pleasure of working with Harper Collins books to illustrate a wonderful little book - all about bees! The book is due to be released in the UK and US later this year. Here are some work-in-progress shots from my desk, featuring a small sneak-peek selection of paintings…

RNA // Somatic Cell Illustration Process

Continued watercolour cell illustrations for bio-engineering company, the wonderful Fluidigm.
This time RNA, (DNA's single stranded-counterpart). I began with some initial concept
sketches, exploring various orientations:

The most linear shape was decided on to be the most instantly recognisable, also so that each end had the potential to link-up in order to create an extended version.

Then followed many colour "test-runs" - to experiment with colour-scheme concepts, and some additional extras to practice technique. Here are a just a few of the tests:

The final RNA strand is a vivid teal with chartreuse-green and fuchsia highlights. As with the previous linear DNA illustrations, there is also an extended, longer version.

Asymmetrical DNA // Somatic Cell Illustration Process

Continued watercolour cell illustrations for bio-engineering company, the wonderful Fluidigm. An asymmetrical-style DNA helix, including open-ends which allow it to link-up upon itself in order to create an extended, longer version of itself. This one was a little trickier to draw...

Then followed a series of colour tests, using bright greens and rich blues:

The final DNA strand has rich tones, with deep shadows and bright highlights:
